The four types of awareness are: 1) Nahual, the awareness of dreams and intuition. 2) Tonal, the awareness of language and logic. 3) Quetzalli, the spiritual needs and pursuits. 4) Coatl, the earthly needs and pursuits.

Rug size: 31.5x55in 80x140cm

Colors: cochineal (dark red and pink) indigo (blue and blue-gray)

Price: $420USD or equivalent currency.

If you purchase out of stock or customize your rug, our lead time is 1 month for production. Samuel and his mom worked together to make this rug for a custom made project that had an unexpected turn; the customers came to visit and fell in love with a old vintage rug laying around the house. So now it is looking for a new home.

The design is inpired on the legend of Crescencio a Nahual who live in our village in the 1900's during the time of the Mexican revolution. Crescencio had the power to transform himself into an eagle to spot the govermnent troops, then he could transform into a tornado to confuse the enemy and scare the horses. He would then lead his men to win victory after victory to protect our land and steal food and money to give to the poor. I understand that tales and stories should not be understool literally, they are told to us in a poetic language and since we are small kids. I believe that humans have the capability to communicate and fine tune with animals, maybe Crescencio didn't literally transform himself into an Eagle but he could communicate with eagles and see directly through their eyes. Or maybe he was just really good at understanding "bird language" as it is taught in nature schools or as it is still practised by many indigenous groups.

The center of this rug has the Eye of the Feather Snake symbol, the diamond with its four corners represent the balance of the four awareneses that are represented un our body. The navel is the center that unifies this forces. From the navel up, we have the bird energy: the spiritual energy of humans. Think of the heart, the brain and the pituitary gland as organs that create thoughts, emotions, dreams and intuitions that can shape the world even though these are intangible things. As much as we inherit DNA we also inherit thoughts, dreams and emotions through stories, that is the spiritual realm of humanity. From the navel down, we have the snake energy that ground us to the world. The snake are the elders of the planet and walk with their full body on the ground, they represent the earthly energy and needs that ensure survival. Think of the kidneys working to maintain the overall fluid balance in our bodies and filtering waste materials. Our reproductive organs and our legs ensure survival and reproduction of our species, we think on our feet to think faster and hunt on the land. The left side of our body is called the Nahual side while the right is called the Tonal. I think of this as the specialized right and left side of the brain. For our ancestors, the Nahual awareness was everything we couldn’t describe precisely with logic and words, for them their dreams were as real as this world that we could see and touch and actually developed special techniques to master their awareness in the world of dreams. The Tonal side is the world of language and logic, in this real our ancestors also excelled, creating a beautiful tonal language that encrypts a lot of knowledge and wisdom. They also understood the mathematical cero and created one of the most precise calendar systems. In fact, John D. Barrow in his book of Nothing praises the ancient calendar and points out that it was so precise in the accounting of time that it took moderns astronomers using high computing power and precise atomic clocks to realize that the calendar system makes a mistake of 0.019 splits of a second per year. When we use our four types of awareness in a balanced way we can see the world through the eye of the feather snake and achieve great feats.

The found symbols in the corners is what I have come to call the cycle of life of a warrior, a warrior embraces death not as something to be feared but as a natural duality of life. While embracing death we become more present and live our lives in the present; instead of shifting from worrying about the past of the future like the Buddhist teach us. The ancient cultures of Anahuac had public, free mandatory schools that their children had to attend. In one of these schools they were taught the way of the warrior: there are many rites of passage and tests they had to pass, too long to elaborate here, however I would like to point out to a few. First is learning how to grow your own food and hunt, then doing long walks and pilgrimages, then using sacred plants, then mastering the art of dreaming and finally being put to test in life and death situations. Young men and women became warriors when they could face death with a true face and a true heart; if you think about it and remember the stories of survival, in life and death situations humans, if they are grounded they bring the best of themselves and could achieve great feats and acts of generosity. Imagine if we were all trained to achieve those states from a young age.

This rug is a perfect gift for young people and anyone going through a personal struggle in life, it is a reminder of the medicine within. I recommend putting this on the floor in the bedroom, bathroom or somewhere where you could be walking on it barefoot so that the sole of your foot absorbs its medicine. Follow up the reading with the four agreements book by Don Miguel Ruiz and the Teachings of Don Juan by Carlos Castaneda. They both derive the knowledge from an ancestral body of wisdom that we call Toltecayotle, a balanced way of life. But don’t be caught in the surface of knowledge, like it happened to people in the 60s after reading the teachings of Don Juan and wanting to do peyote ceremonies every weekend. Use indigenous knowledge appropriately and with respect, these patterns are universal and are always speaking to us, the sacred geometry in our DNA is shared and if we treated as sacred it will unveil itself to us all.

This rug was woven by my mom Leonor Lazo Gonzalez; I helped her to weave it a little bit whenever I had a break from farmwork. If features the Nahual (medicine women or man) symbol as its main feature.

This pattern is a fractal symbol that teaches us about the perception state that nahuales (shamans) achieve when they unite their nahual perception in the spirit world with the day to day perception in the tonal world of language, logic and mathematics. The nahual pattern is obtained by uniting the hands in a fist shape with the thumbs joined in the middle, just like a mudra. Can you see it? This pattern also looks like the spiral of the Fibonacci series, the golden ratio that is found everywhere in nature, from our fists to the growth of plants and the formation of clouds and galaxies. This inner spiral represents the inner journey of self discovery that we have to embark to find our true face and true heart. We call this symbol in our language "Gareak Guiea", literally the flowered greek key symbol. Archeologist named this patterns Grecas in Spanish language because they noted the similarity with greek patterns and symbols. This naming of the pattern denotes the Eurocentric approach to the understanding of our native ancient cultures.

When I talk about the Nahual pattern I like to illustrate the pattern with the life path of Maria Sabina, a world renowned healer from Huautla de Jimenez that used the sacred mushroom to heal people in her village. It took her a life time to reach the status of a healer; when she was a young child her parents died so because she was very poor she and her sister would forage edible wild plants in the forest to feed themselves. Her life pattern lead her to walk the path of the warrior to bring the best of her spirit and flower in the world. When she was an accomplished healer she could transition easily from the Nahual perception (spirit world) to the day to day world; in the spirit world she would communicate with her patients to find out the source of their illness and then come back to the tonal world (day to day language world) to administer the healing with the precise amounts of plants and rituals needed for healing. Most ancient governors in our culture were Nahuales, healers, seers and great man and woman full if knowledge. It was during the colonial times that the word nahual got transgressed into a negative connotations describing evil people that cause damage and illness by transforming into scary animals.

All ancient governors in our culture were high Shamans trained in all the fine arts and advanced sciences of the time. The color red represents the blood of the earth necessary for life while the blue represents the cosmic elements needed for life on earth to be sustained. Effectively this rug represents a balance of heaven on earth, or may we say earth in heaven? The pattern is the Fibonacci sequence which many ancient cultures have studied and described before him and is the basic principle of the golden ratio. Geometry and poetry marry in the language of weaving to paint the underlying principles of life and the cycles of the cosmos.

Size: 80x150cm 2.6x5ft

Dyes: Cochineal dyes, tagetes lucida and pomegranates.

Dyers: Leonor Lazo and Mario Bautista

Weaver: Reynaldo López

The Diamond pattern comes from the skin of the rattle snake and represents knowledge, power, wisdom and medicine.

This rug depicts a stylized version of the eye of Bealguie'æ (Eye of the Plumed Serpent); this nested diamond pattern is known colloquially in our weaving community as shiísh, the pineapple. Geometry and poetry marry in the language of weaving to paint the underlying principles of life and the long cycles of the cosmos.

Weaver: Marį Guíîn

Size: 216x303cm; 85x119.5in; 7x10ft

Weight: 7.7kg Threads per Inch: 7

Materials: fine merino wool worsted and dyed with Cochineal, Tagetes Lucida and Xiuhquilitl.

The colors in this rug are the primary colors that we use in our natural dye repertoire to derive many of the other colors we use in our rugs. This essential colors are the basic colors of the sunrise and the sunset and the colors that pigment the feathers of the Scarlet Macaw. The blue colors were dyed with our native indigo (Xiuhquilitl), indigo has been used in our continent since about 6000 years ago, as evidenced by a mummy's textile preserved in Perú. The yellow is dyed with Yauhtli (Tagetes Lucida, Pericón or Mexican tarragon) this flower is used medicinally to treat stomach aches and ritually to induce powerful visions. The red comes from Beé (cochineal) a domesticated bug that grows in the prickle pear cactus that transformed the politic and economic situation of sixteenth century Europe by producing a superb red dye that could last more than 500 years on Textiles. Using these three essential dye colors we could replicate the colors of the sunrise and the sunset. You can dye yarn with Yauhtli and overdye it with cochineal to get shades of orange to pale Mamey Zapote colors. With cochineal we can get all the shades or burgundy, red, scarlet, purples and pinks. The indigo can be dark night sky blue to light dawn blue to midday nitid blue. The boldness of these colors are the colors of the trees that hold the sky above our heads, the east has a red color, the north white, the west black and the south yellow; in the middle there is a green tree of life that unifies the four directions of the Universe.

The bird and the snake are very ancient symbols that illustrate a deep understanding of the forces of life that make our existence possible in this earthly plane of the four directions. Snakes are the elders of the planet and hold the ancient knowledge, medicine and power. In our language, the word for sister is Bealaā, my snake. The Serpent constellation is located in the south plane and given its relation to the tilt of the milky way in the night sky our seers would make predictions about the rain patterns and the future of our people.

This pattern is a fractal symbol that teaches us about the perception state that nahuales (shamans) achieve when they unite their nahual perception in the spirit world with the day to day perception in the tonal world of language, logic and mathematics. The nahual pattern woven in the middle of the Diamond is obtained by uniting the hands in a fist shape with the thumbs joined in the middle, just like a mudra.

When I talk about the Nahual pattern I like to illustrate the pattern with the life path of Maria Sabina, a world renowned healer from Huatla de Jimenez that used the sacred mushroom to heal people in her village.

It is through the language of weaving that the ancient teachings got preserved and they still help us continually analyse our existence trapped where the sky and the underworld kiss each other. These timeless patterns and symbols are built into our bodies, into the growth of plants and the formation of galaxies, they remind us of our cosmic origin and the awareness that we are pure energy always transforming never stagnant. The universe that creates itself to know itself. It is believed that the ancient Nahuales would know exactly when they were going to die, they were probably in such good tune with their bodies or were willing to give up their lives for a bigger cause that for them death was just another stage of the process of life. The Nahual spirits like enlightened spirits, is believed to return to the sun, depicted as the Quincunce (five pointed cross) inside the diamond, this little diamond also represents the journey of the sun in each point: sunrise, midday, sunset, underworld journey and rebirth in a new sunrise. The middle red dot represents the balance of the four directions, when there is balance there is light and clarity in our life. This duality represents the original two aspects of creation, the sky energy and the earthly one. In his book the Cosmic Tree, Frank Desmedt describes the 'Astronical' explanation of this duality. The Mayans made precise observations of how the galaxy appeared in the Sky, to the south it points to the Serpent constellation and to the north to the Canis Major which in our cultures has the shape of a Macaw bird.

Our grandparents always observed the night sky. I remember, my grandmother always making predictions about the rain pattern by looking at the position of the stars and the tilt of the milky way. In fact, the word for Milky way in Benizaa language is the same word for corn plant, this is because the growth of our corn plants is intimately joined with the subtle astronomical phenomena in the sky.

So in this light, we cannot ever just talk about the earth alone, we must remember that the tree of life has its branches in the heavens and roots in the underworld. When you see the Serpent descending on the steps of the Chichen Itza sacred site, it is announcing the beginning of the rainy season, just like the snake like lightning storms that prelude the big rains. The rains permeate the earth and sprout the seeds of life and this water will travel to the depth of underground rivers and water tables only to evaporate again and complete the water cycle. Every aspect of the ancient world was cyclical and had a reason to be; from the heavens, the surface world and the underworld. With respects to the current world situation, we have come at a time in history where we need to radically transform our way of life to respect and restore the life support systems of the earth. What aspects of our live need to be buried underground and be transformed into a new way of life? May we transition from an ecocidal modernity to a restorative society that seeks the elevation of the human spirit and needs to focus more on the immaterial aspects of life that make our lives more worth living. During this great slowdown of the industrial and economic machinery we are turning back to slow, small and sustainable living. We are seeing a great rebalancing of nature's energy flows. This virus doing some work for the underworld, like the great crocodile monster that takes our dead bodies to the lord and lady of the underworld. Like the composting of nutrients that will allow other seeds to be reborn and live the mortal dream once again. My people gave up acorn processing for corn cultivation, but in the sacred mountain where our village was founded there are still acorn/corn grinding holes around a site that has several types of oak trees growing near by. I have learnt that we must remember our ancient knowledge to have the connection with the land in case Climate Chaos or another human caused crisis turns into many of the cataclysms that destroyed the previous four world inhabited by humans in our cosmology. Self sufficiency and and self reliance will be key, our corn fields last year produced only 20% of the corn that my grandfather used to harvest. Even the Oak trees did not produce much acorn due to the low rains of the season, but as a perennial tree they have a much better advantage and a necessary conection must be woven.

My mom and I dyed some yarns following Michel Garcías Mango recipe described in his DVD Natural Dye workshop II: colors of the Americas on wool fibers using sustainable methods. I bought this DVD at a yarn shop in California, to find out our people were featured in it. There is a lot of irony in the circlings of life. Our people in our community are so secretive about their methods and techniques within our village given the competition within families to produce and sell rugs but we are so willing to share our knowledge with the outside world as a way to make a name for ourselves and get recognised. I love the work of Michel Garcia and praise the work he is doing for preserving and expanding the knowledge of Natural dyes, but I have to say I did not feel so comfortable seeing how he showed some of our techniques after he learnt them from local families in our village. Time and time again Europeans have showed up here to gather plants, extract knowledge and totally appropriate it as theirs, so it is a careful walk on treacherous lands. He did mostly a good job pointing out to European methods and his own version of each method. Ironically, given the fact that some of the plants that we used historically as mordants are not cultivated or tended for in the wild anymore so we end up using alum as a mordant which is the European Method.

The times we are living on the earth call for great action to change our Ecocidal behaviour to restorative actions that balance our relationship with the life support systems of the earth. The posture of the nude woman is like the posture of a number of seated nudes made in the first years of the 1920s, ultimately, the posture derives from the reposed figures of Le bonheur de vivre.[2] The second in the series, Blue Nude II, was completed in 1952.[1]

Despite the flatness of paper, the cut-outs reflect Matisse’s earlier sculptures in their tangible, relief-like quality, especially the sense of volume created by the overlapping of the cut-outs. Blue Nude I, in particular, can be compared with sculptures such as La Serpentine, from 1909.[3] Blue Nude I has been a favourite one among Zapotec weavers.

Size: 66x103cm; 26x40.5in

A collectors tapestry piece woven by my cousin Justino Martinez Mendoza using hemp warp, wool weft mixed with henequen all dyed with natural dyes. The pattern is the Fibonacci sequence which many ancient cultures have studied and described before him and is the basic principle of the golden ratio. The nahual pattern is obtained by uniting the hands in a fist shape with the thumbs joined in the middle, just like a #mudra.

When I talk about the Nahual pattern I like to illustrate the pattern with the life path of Maria Sabina, a world renowned healer from Huatla de Jimenez that used the sacred mushroom to heal people in her village. The nahual pattern is obtained by uniting the hands in a fist shape with the thumbs joined in the middle, just like a mudra.

When I talk about the Nahual pattern I like to illustrate the pattern with the life path of Maria Sabina, a world renowned healer from Huatla de Jimenez that used the sacred mushroom to heal people in her village. It took her a life time to reach the status of a healer; when she was a young child her parents died and because she was very poor she and her sister would forage edible wild plants in the forest to feed themselves; that led her to her first encounter with the sacred healing mushrooms. Her life pattern lead her to walk the path of the warrior to bring the best of her spirit and flower in the world. When she was an accomplished healer she could transition easily from the Nahual perception (spirit world) to the day to day world; in the spirit world she would communicate with her patients to find out the source of their illness (emotional trauma, dark spirit, viral infection...etc) and then come back to the tonal world (day to day language world) to administer healing with the precise amounts of plants and rituals needed for healing. Most ancient governors in our culture were Nahuales, healers, seers; people in pursuit of knowledge. It was during the colonial times that the word nahual got transgressed into a negative connotations describing evil shape shifters that cause damage and illness by transforming into scary animals.

The diamond pattern represents the medicine of the snake. These 1900's ponchos embraced the same idea and the more intricate they got the more they signified satus and wealth (sadly so) but also great achievements in the fight for freedom during the Mexican Revolution, our grandparents gave their lives so that we could retain our autonomy and ancestral lands. Only great leaders and captains wore the Eagle design poncho as it was since the ancient times with the eagle warrior outfit.
This is a time to drop our silly games and really stand up for freedom and justice. People were marching in LA to free our kids in cages, the news about the sexual abuse to our children and their parents is duscusting and traumatizing.
