Materials and methods: This are the natural colors of criollo sheep wool, the grays are made with white and black yarn mixed in different proportions. The desert tan was obtained with the spent forrage from the red ants, making this rug a kind of amulet of protection. Handwoven on a Zapotec style loom of the 16th century adapted from European styles. Woven using a 7 threads per inch reed and wool rayon blend for warp.
Design, patterns and symbols.
This rug represents the conjunction of the Scorpio constellation as it rises before venus and the sun every eight years in the ancient calendar; this ancient observations have been documented in the murals of Cacaxtla. This sacred site is was built by Olmecs and has Mayan and Zapotec influence as part of their astronomical observations and artwork.
