Shaa Guiibaá: sky

Size: 60x100cm; 2x3ft 

Materials and methods: criollo sheep wool hand dyed with Xiuhquilitl (indigo). Handwoven on a Zapotec style loom of the 16th century adapted from European styles. Woven using a 7 threads per inch reed.

Patterns and symbols: Sha'a guiibaà translates as sky for us; but it literally word by word, translates as bottom root place of fire/stars. What if when we are looking "up" in the sky we are really looking down into the bowl of the cosmos, it is all relative. No wonder why our ancestros referred to the earth as a turtle island floating in the immense blue sea of the sky when looking "down".

Materiales y métodos: lana de borrego criollo teñida a mano con Xiuhquilitl (añil). Tejido a mano en telar Zapoteco del siglo XVI adaptado de telares Europeos. Tejido en un peime de 7 hilos por pulgada.

Patrones y symbolos: Sha'a guiibaà se traduce como la palabra cielo; pero literalmente, palabra por palabra, se traduce como abajo en la raiz del fuego/estrellas. Que tal si al mirar el cielo hacia "arriba" uno realmente mira hacia abajo al fondo del cosmos, todo es relativo. No sorprende que nuestros ancestros se refieran a la tierra como la isla de la tortuga que flota en el inmenso mar azul del cielo, mirando hacia "abajo".
